E471 is source-dependent. It can be made from plant oils, animal fats or mixed inputs. A label that only says “E471” or “mono- and diglycerides” does not reveal that source, so the practical result is: verify it.
Is E471 halal? Plant-derived E471 can be suitable. Pork-derived material is not. Animal-derived material needs acceptable species, slaughter and production evidence under the standard you follow.
E471 and mono- and diglycerides are the same label problem
E471 is the European additive number for mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids. Bakers see it in commercial bread, cake mix, margarine, shortening, frosting, chocolate and release agents. The code identifies the additive class, not the origin of its fatty acids.
The American Halal Foundation advises looking for wording such as “vegetable mono- and diglycerides,” supplier evidence, or recognized halal certification. It also notes that the production route can involve glycerol, fats and sometimes enzymes, so a vague answer such as “food grade” does not establish halal provenance.

Ask one precise question
Ask the manufacturer: “Are every fatty-acid, glycerol and enzyme input used for this product’s E471 entirely plant-derived or covered by current halal certification?” Include the country and exact product name because formulas can differ by market.
