This formulation is written for ingredients whose source can be checked. It has not been submitted for third-party halal certification, and the page does not claim that every product sold under a similar ingredient name is suitable.
This two-layer chocolate cake uses cocoa, plant oil and hot coffee or water for a deep chocolate profile. The halal checks are concentrated where a label can become ambiguous: vanilla flavor, chocolate, emulsifiers and any decorations added after frosting.

The prefilled list uses alcohol-free vanilla; replace it with the exact products you plan to use.
Ingredients
Chocolate cake
- 240 gplain/all-purpose wheat flour
- 65 gunsweetened cocoa powder
- 300 gcaster or granulated sugar
- 9 gbaking soda (about 1½ teaspoons)
- 4 gfine salt (about ¾ teaspoon)
- 2 largeeggs, at room temperature
- 240 mlplain buttermilk
- 120 mlsunflower or canola oil
- 10 mlalcohol-free vanilla extract, or a suitable vanilla powder
- 240 mlhot black coffee or hot water
Cocoa buttercream
- 200 gunsalted butter, softened
- 330 gicing/confectioners’ sugar
- 45 gunsweetened cocoa powder
- 45–60 mlplain whipping cream or milk
- 5 mlalcohol-free vanilla extract, optional
- 1 pinchfine salt
Method
- Prepare the tins. Heat the oven to 180°C/350°F conventional (160°C fan). Grease two 20 cm/8-inch round tins and line the bases with baking paper.
- Combine the dry ingredients. Whisk flour, cocoa, sugar, baking soda and salt in a large bowl. Break up any cocoa lumps.
- Add the wet ingredients. Whisk eggs, buttermilk, oil and alcohol-free vanilla in a separate jug. Pour into the dry mixture and stir just until evenly combined.
- Thin with hot liquid. Gradually mix in the hot coffee or water. The batter will be fluid; divide it evenly between the tins.
- Bake. Bake for 30–35 minutes. The centre should spring back lightly and a skewer should emerge without wet batter. Cool in the tins for 10 minutes, then turn onto a rack and cool fully.
- Make the frosting. Beat the softened butter until smooth. Add icing sugar and cocoa gradually, then enough cream to make a spreadable frosting. Mix in the optional alcohol-free vanilla and salt.
- Assemble. Level only if needed. Spread frosting between the cooled layers, then cover the top and sides. Keep decorations separate until their labels have been checked.
Ingredient checks that matter
Vanilla
The simplest cautious option is an alcohol-free extract, vanilla bean or vanilla powder with clear composition. If you use conventional vanilla extract, review the position of the authority you follow. ISA and MUIS publish examples of differing, scoped approaches to flavor-carrier ethanol; this website does not collapse them into one universal ruling.
Cocoa and chocolate
Plain cocoa powder is straightforward as a label term. Chocolate pieces and compound coatings can add generic lecithin, mono- and diglycerides, flavoring, whey or decorative glaze. Paste the chocolate’s full sub-ingredient list rather than only “chocolate.” “Chocolate liquor” means cocoa mass, not an alcoholic drink.
Frosting and decorations
Homemade buttercream keeps the list short. Premixed frosting, sprinkles and fondant may add shortening, glycerin, E471, gelatin, carmine/E120 or shellac/E904. Use our halal cake decorations guide before finishing the cake.
Substitutions
- No buttermilk: use 240 ml plain yogurt loosened with a little milk. Avoid assuming a flavored yogurt has the same ingredient profile.
- No coffee: use the same amount of hot water. Coffee deepens cocoa flavor but is not necessary for structure.
- No alcohol-free vanilla: use vanilla powder or seeds from a vanilla bean; follow the package dosage.
- Dairy-free adaptation: use an unsweetened plant drink and a suitable plant-based frosting fat, checking emulsifiers and flavors on both labels.
Storage
Store the covered cake in a cool room for up to two days if the frosting and room temperature allow it. Refrigerate in warmer conditions or when using a perishable filling; bring slices toward room temperature before serving. Freeze unfrosted, well-wrapped layers for up to one month for best quality.
Storage depends on the filling, frosting, ambient temperature and local food-safety guidance. This page is not a substitute for allergen or food-safety controls.
