Vanilla extract needs more than a yes or no answer. In the United States, standard vanilla extract contains ethyl alcohol by definition. Some halal authorities allow its limited use in baked food, while others require an alcohol-free product. Follow the authority or certifier you trust and do not assume that baking removes every concern.
Is vanilla extract halal? Start with the exact label. “Vanilla extract,” “vanilla flavor,” “vanilla powder,” and “alcohol-free vanilla” are not interchangeable terms. The ingredient checker treats an explicit alcohol-free claim differently from a generic extract.
Why US vanilla extract contains alcohol
The US standard of identity for vanilla extract requires at least 35 percent ethyl alcohol by volume in the finished extract. The alcohol draws flavor compounds from vanilla beans and carries them into the recipe. This is a regulatory fact about the product, not a halal ruling.
Islamic Services of America notes that Muslim authorities do not all reach the same conclusion about small amounts of vanilla extract in baking. Its consumer guidance also suggests alcohol-free vanilla, vanilla beans or vanilla powder when a baker wants to avoid that disagreement.
What the package wording tells you

If your standard excludes alcohol-containing extract, choose vanilla bean, vanilla powder or a product explicitly sold as alcohol-free and suitable under the certification you follow. Do not replace extract with the same volume of concentrated powder without checking the manufacturer’s directions.
